Energy Australia's proposed 1.4-gigawatt gas-fired power plant at Marulan sparks debate over the future of energy generation in Australia. Geoff Bongers, an energy consultant and adjunct professor, predicts a wave of similar gas projects as coal plants retire and nuclear energy remains off the table. He emphasizes the need for additional gas infrastructure to support these new facilities. The AEMO's data reveals a significant shift in energy generation, with 6,000 megawatts of coal-fired power being decommissioned and 6,800 megawatts of new gas-fired generation in the pipeline.

The Marulan project's future remains uncertain, as the federal Department for Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water assesses the modification application under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act. The public exhibition, scheduled for October, will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to voice their opinions and concerns. As Australia navigates its energy transition, the Marulan project serves as a focal point for the ongoing debate surrounding the role of gas in the country's energy future.
